Bullying in school and elsewhere has taken the most horrific shape over the years and neither has it felt any shame in reaching the internet that your kids access through their computers and mobile phones. The number of students involved in bullying their fellow students is increasing at an alarming rate and a big chunk of this consists of cyberbullying.
And when most kids have their own cell phones and an easy access to internet keeping them in touch with their friends and classmates, it is no difficult a task for a bully to torment the child from the other side of the phone. Different bullies have different reasons for bullying their peers but one common thing is that it makes the victim miserable beyond imagination and sadly, the victim may even be your loving kid.
Safeguarding your Kids from Cyberbullying
Talk to your Child, Be their Friend
Kids are generally secretive in nature especially when it comes to sharing their victimization with their parents or elders. They feel weak and don’t want to share their weakness with anyone and if you aren’t very friendly with them the measure of discomfort increases. And sometimes it is far more than weakness or discomfort and your child is badly scared and speaks nothing out of fear.
You got to be friendly with your kids and take them in your total confidence. Make them believe that you are their friend and well wisher. You want only the good to happen with them and want them to be safe from all kinds of troubles.
Keep an Eye on their Mobile & Internet Activities
Keeping a check on internet usage of children when they use it through computer is easier as you can place the computer at a particular place in your home and have a look at the internet activities of your child but with unrestricted and mobile internet accessibility on the cell phone it becomes difficult to have a check on what your child is doing. And in fact, the increase in cyberbullying has much influence of the easy internet accessibility available on the cell phone.
It is important to end kids’ cyberbullying via mobile phone because more kids own mobile phones these days and most of them access internet through their phones. One great way of doing this is to install mobile monitoring software on your kids’ mobile phone and monitor all their activities, the things they share on the chat rooms, social networking sites, the chats through SMS, etc. This way you’ll know if they are being victimized by some bully or they themselves are involved in any bullying activities.
The grapevine has it that cyberbullying will be made illegal and punishable act soon but till then you need to stand by your kids and keep an eye on all their mobile activities to keep them safe.
